The Power of Hugs: A Simple Tool to Combat Negativity and Promote Positive Change

We have had some restrictions and difficulties in recent years with showing physical affection. Some of us didn't need excuses to stay away from people as we are not the "touchy feely" types and all was good. For the rest of us, quarantine attempted to separate us from our loved ones and made it more difficult to indulge in this very simple but powerful tool.

Hugs are often considered one of the most simple and genuine forms of human connection. They can be a source of comfort and reassurance during tough times or a way to celebrate joyous moments. However, hugs also have a deeper power that is often overlooked. In fact, hugs can be considered a weapon of choice, used to combat negativity and promote positive change.

Studies have shown that hugs have a multitude of benefits. They can boost oxytocin levels, which promotes feelings of happiness, bonding, and trust. They can also lower stress and blood pressure, leading to a greater sense of calm and relaxation. Hugs have even been shown to improve immune function and reduce feelings of social isolation.

In today's world, where negativity and divisiveness seem to be more prevalent than ever, hugs can serve as a powerful tool for change. They can bridge the gap between people of different cultures, religions, and backgrounds, promoting empathy and understanding. They can also serve as a reminder that, despite our differences, we all share a common humanity.

Hugs can also be used to combat negativity on an individual level. By hugging someone who is feeling down, we can offer comfort and support. They can even be used to promote forgiveness, allowing us to let go of grudges and move on from past hurt.

Of course, it's important to remember that not everyone is comfortable with physical touch, and we should always respect others' boundaries. However, when given with respect and sensitivity, hugs can be a powerful tool.

Now that the pandemic no longer has its hooks in us, it may be a good time to begin easing back into using hugs as the powerful tool that they are.

I have to admit that I am one of those who is careful with touching others. So I make it a point to place those additional hugs where I know they are safe. (poor wife, lucky wife, you decide!)

Oh, you don't have someone to place those hugs on? Try out giving yourself a gentle caress or pat on the back for a job well done.

Odd? probably,

Useful? most definitely.

Don't think you can do it?

Have you ever rubbed your hands together to keep them warm? Rubbed them on your lap or your head to keep cool and calm? Ever rubbed your belly in order to calm it down after a big meal?

Then you are already engaging in soothing physical touch. Why not take the step to purposefully give yourself a big dose of affection, consolation and encouragement?

Physical touch has a magical property that can help calm the self, warm the heart, and sometimes even bring upon hope for a better tomorrow.

Take advantage of this powerful tool and let me know how you feel. Make sure you practice hug safety first. (who ever thought I would have to say something like that).
